Famous Grouse chief Greig to head US push

Scotland’s largest independent whisky company, Edrington Group, has promoted its global marketing controller for the Famous Grouse brand, Ian Greig, to the new position of regional director, Highland Distillers, the Americas.

The new position puts him in charge of all commercial development for Famous Grouse, The Macallan and Highland Park whiskies in North and South America. He will report to commercial director Gerry O’Donnell.

An Edrington spokesman says: “We have identified these territories as key markets for growth for our brands, and we wanted someone who can build up our presence there.”

Greig’s current post will be taken over by Murray Calder, global marketing controller for The Macallan. Edrington is recruiting a replacement for Calder. The company is also on the hunt for someone to fill the position of US “brands ambassador” for The Macallan, based in New York.

Edrington owns 70 per cent of Highland Distillers, with William Grant owning the remainder. It also owns Cutty Sark and Glengoyne.

About 60 per cent of Edrington’s sales come from outside the UK. North America is the biggest market for its flagship single malt, The Macallan, which has just started its biggest US advertising campaign, worth $3.5m (&£2.4m).
