Daewoo seeks marketing chief

General Motors is understood to be searching for a director to head European marketing for Daewoo, following its acquisition of the Korean company last month.

The appointment will mark the first time Daewoo has had a European marketing strategy, and is certain to halt a UK advertising review called two months ago (MW March 28).

The new director will be based at GM’s Zurich headquarters, and is likely to report to GM’s European sales and marketing chief Jonathan Browning. The post is likely to result in the appointment of a single agency network to handle Daewoo’s European advertising.

UK distributor Daewoo UK called a review in March, ending a seven-year relationship with Duckworth Finn Grubb Waters.

Two weeks ago, it chose HHCL & Partners, Roose, St Luke’s, Vallance Carruthers Coleman Priest, McCann-Erickson, Banks Hoggins O’Shea/FCB and Clemmow Hornby Inge to pitch for the &£6.5m business.

The review is being handled by the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers, overseen by Daewoo marketing services manager Nigel Unwin. The UK company has not had a marketing director since the departure of Pat Farrell last summer.

General Motors, which also owns Vauxhall, bought Daewoo for $400m (&£270m) on April 30 this year.
