Euro RSCG Direct looks after the company’s advertising and OMD Gemini is the media agency.
The Eurotunnel Group comprises Folkestone-based Eurotunnel plc and Paris-based Eurotunnel SA. The company runs the Channel Tunnel drive-on train Le Shuttle and hosts the Eurostar passenger service. It also has telecoms cables inside the tunnel which it leases to communications companies.
In March 2000 marketing was moved to Calais. It is headed by European marketing director Eric Barrois.
The company has focused on direct marketing in recent years, supported by its loyalty scheme Points Plus, handled by Carlson.
The company teamed up with the French Government Tourist Office and five regions in Northern France last September for a &£625,000 campaign promoting self-drive weekends. It also carried out a Christmas point-of-sale campaign to boost awareness of its retail offering in the UK and France.
Investment in security measures to deter asylum seekers from the nearby Sangatte refugee camp, and the downturn in the telecoms market hit Eurotunnels’ February 2002 results. Total turnover dropped six per cent to &£564m year on year and losses increased to &£132m compared with &£124m in the previous year. The company has just completed its latest debt restructuring, which cuts its borrowings by &£400m.
