L’Oréal Paris has moved its US marketing director, Michael Tanguy, to head its Garnier division in the UK.
Tanguy replaces Emma Walmsley, who becomes senior vice-president responsible for marketing the Maybelline brand worldwide. Walmsley will be based in New York.
In his new role as Garnier general manager, Tanguy will be responsible for both mass-market make-up brand Maybelline and skin and haircare brand Garnier, formerly called Laboratoires Garnier. He will report to L’Oréal UK managing director Geoff Skingsley.
Tanguy will oversee the strategic development of a variety of product lines, including the suncare range Ambre Solaire and Fructis shampoos and conditioners.
Garnier and Maybelline form part of L’Oréal’s consumer products division. The L’Oréal Group acquired Maybelline New York in 1996 and the brand launched in the UK two years ago.
The cosmetics company recently signed a deal with retailer Boots to screen its advertising in stores throughout October (MW last week). The initiative uses new technology that the company claims to have developed. It enables consumers to scan L’Oréal products on screens and access detailed information and advice before they buy.
The initiative will be launched in 13 Boots stores around the UK, rolling out to other stores if the trial is a success.
