Historic Royal Palaces has handed its &£1.5m advertising account to Miles Calcraft Briginshaw Duffy.

The agency will also handle media planning, while Starcom Motive has been appointed to handle media buying.

The appointment was made by marketing director Danny Homan and was handled by the AAR.

The agency picked up the business after a three-way pitch against Partners BDDH and Roose. Incumbent Senior King did not repitch for the business. It is not known whether Media Options, which handled both media planning and buying, repitched.

Historic Royal Palaces was created in 1989 to manage the unoccupied royal palaces and promote them to the public. In 1998, its activities were transferred to a Royal Charter Body with charitable status. The body is contracted by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

Palaces under the body’s care include the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace and the Whitehall Banqueting House. The bulk of last year’s advertising spend was devoted to promoting the Tower of London.

Miles Calcraft will begin preparing work for an Easter 2003 campaign. A spokesman for Historic Royal Palaces says activity will be designed to increase visits from the domestic market and lessen reliance on overseas tourists.
