I’m dreaming of a greener Xmas card

The Diary is not amused by all the wastage at Christmas. If it’s supposed to be a time of giving, what do the trees get? Cut down and made into wrapping paper and cards, that’s what. And most of those are as cheesy as a very ripe gorgonzola.

What about the poor and the needy? Blessed are the meek and, it seems, the retailers. Which is why it is such a relief that PointBlank Design – creators of the broken Osbournes mug (and the intact one, of course) – came up with a recycled Christmas card for its client MTV. Not only is it environmentally friendly, but MTV Networks Europe is making a donation to The Medical Foundation – a charity that cares for victims of torture.

It’s good to see that in this blatantly commercial season of goodwill, some of the meaning behind Christmas is peeking through. In the words of Dickens: “A merry Christmas to everybody. A happy New Year to all the world!”
