Adshel wins £6.5m Liverpool city centre shelter contract

Outdoor advertising company Adshel has won Liverpool’s street furniture contract to supply bus shelters in the city centre.

The contract, worth more than £6.5m over a 15-year period, means Adshel will supply 170 advertising panels in Liverpool’s city centre. Adshel, part of Clear Channel, won the business after a competitive tender against its rival JC Decaux.

Adshel claims it now controls 14 out of the top 20 UK cities and has a 65 per cent share of the six-sheet market. These claims, backed by figures from Postar, will reignite a feud between Adshel and JC Decaux over which company controls the majority of the top UK cities. Decaux claims it controls eight of the top 15 cities.

The new bus shelter advertising sites will begin to go up in Liverpool in April this year. Adshel’s managing director, Julie France, says: “Liverpool is an incredibly important market and this win provides Adshel with a unique offering to advertisers – 100 per cent city centre domination and 78 per cent city-wide coverage of the UK’s fifth-largest city.”

In a separate move, the National Union of Students is reviewing the contract for its poster sites at the 689 student unions throughout the UK. Rockbox, a subsidiary of Clear Channel International, has held the contract for more than five years. The NUS currently has 137 sites at its union buildings which, it claims, are used by more than 5 million students in the UK.
