Overcoming hurdles a tad late in life

The Diary has nothing but admiration (well, and bemusement) for those people who strive to break the barriers of physical achievement. Particularly when they’re at an age when they’re more likely to break something else.

So hats off (and elastic bandages on) to Des Wilkinson, an account director at Wegener Direct Marketing, who has won the 60m hurdles for over-40s at the European Masters Indoor Athletics Championships in San Sebastián.

Des hopes to compete next in the World Outdoor Championships, to be held in Puerto Rico in July. The Diary wishes him well in adding to his medal collection – it’ll be something to show his grandchildren.
