Manchester council hunts marketing boss

Manchester City Council (MCC) is looking for a marketing director to build on the city’s national and international profile following the successful Commonwealth Games last year.

Manchester hosted the games last summer and the event drew more than 1 million visitors to the city. It has now created the new post of marketing director to take a strategic role and help formulate a “single recognised brand.”

The marketing director will report to an advisory steering group chaired by the chief executive of the MCC and comprising various stakeholders such as the North West Development Agency (NWDA) and Marketing Manchester. The latter is a public body formed to focus on tourism.

The marketing director will co-ordinate activities for several sectors, including education and city-centre business.

MCC recently appointed design agency Hemisphere to develop identities for two international festivals to be held in the city – Festival Europa and Europride 2003. Festival Europa takes place around the Champions League final, to be held on May 28 at Old Trafford. Europride takes place in August.

The former commercial director of the Manchester Commonwealth Games 2002, Niels de Vos, moved on to take the role of chief executive of rugby union club Sale Sharks (MW September 12, 2002). De Vos raised about &£35m worth of sponsorship for the games.
