Manchester Airport hires head of marketing

Manchester Airport has appointed Clive Tilley to the new position of head of marketing to help it in its battle for business against regional rival Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Tilley has worked within National Express Group’s train divisions for the past six years. He began at Midlands Mainline as head of marketing in 1997, moving on to marketing director at Central Trains before becoming commercial director at London Lines.

Before joining National Express, Tilley spent five years at Avis Rent A Car UK, rising to head of marketing.

His role at Manchester Airport involves full responsibility for marketing decisions and agency relationships. Advertising is handled by BDH/TBWA and media planning and buying is by Mediaedge:CIA Manchester.

Tilley reports to managing director John Spooner and is charged with building relationships with airlines, and devising and implementing an e-commerce strategy.

Manchester Airport is owned by the independent Manchester Airport Group. It recently cut its landing charges in a bid to win more business from low-cost airlines.

Low-cost airline easyJet, which flies out of Liverpool John Lennon Airport to Belfast, has just launched a connecting bus service from Manchester Piccadilly train station and the city’s coach station to ferry passengers to Liverpool. British Airways and bmi both fly from Manchester to Belfast.
