Virgin Radio fills marketing post

Virgin Radio has appointed David Andrews, the former Capital Radio Group marketing director, as its most senior marketer. It is the station’s first dedicated marketing position in seven years.

Andrews, who will have the title of marketing consultant, will be responsible for developing an overall marketing strategy for the station as well as planning and executing specific campaigns. He will be based at the station’s head office in Golden Square, London, and will report to programme controller Paul Jackson.

The appointment of Andrews is part of a move by the station to develop a more strategic approach to marketing. He is keen to develop a new personality for the station and raise the profile of its reorganised schedule, which has included changing the breakfast show three times in 18 months.

The marketing responsibilities for the station have been spread around different departments during the past seven years, but the station has generated publicity through personalities such as former owner and breakfast show DJ Chris Evans, who lost his unfair dismissal case against Virgin last month.

Andrews was appointed as the first group marketing director of Capital Radio in 2001 (MW August 2, 2001). He was previously regional marketing director, dealing with all of its stations outside London. Since leaving the group in September 2002, he has been working with marketing services agency, Talisman Marketing.
