Unwins has delisted the Carlsberg beer brand from its retail outlets.
It is understood differences arose between the retailer and the brewer when Carlsberg-Tetley increased its in-store marketing focus on multiple retail outlets and away from specialist off-trade retailers such as Unwins.
Unwins, however, does stock the Carlsberg Special Brew brand, which it procures from outside the UK.
Unwins marketing director Ian McLernon says: “We’re concentrating on Fosters’ and Carling, which are the main fast-moving brands. The only Carlsberg brand that we know our customers would want is the super-strength version, Special Brew.”
In the UK, Carlsberg-Tetley brews Carlsberg, Tetley’s, Carlsberg Export, Carlsberg Special Brew, Calder’s and Premium Cream Beer for the Scottish market.
A Carlsberg-Tetley spokeswoman adds: “The decision was taken by Unwins over the way we do business.”
Earlier this year, the brewer tightened its grip on rugby sponsorship and increased its presence north of the border, in a deal tying up its Tetley’s brand with the Scottish Rugby Union (MW January 16).
