MediaCom wins £4m Opodo brief

Opodo, the online travel service, has appointed MediaCom to handle its one-off media-buying projects following a three-way pitch. The company’s &£4m UK media account was held by Carat, but the agency did not repitch for the project.

Opodo has decided against appointing a permanent media planning and buying agency in the short term. However, Carat will continue to work for Opodo on one-off opportunities in Europe. The decision to appoint MediaCom will not affect Leagas Delaney, which handles the pan-European creative advertising.

The review was overseen by Opodo’s European brand manager Stefan Kovach. The travel company has seen a number of additions to its marketing team this year. ITV Digital’s customer service and operations director Karen Richardson joined as commercial director this summer (MW June 12) and Thomas Cook marketer Richard Hadfield joined as UK country manager in April.

The appointments followed the departure of marketing director Nicolas de Santis in January after two years at the company. Richardson and Hadfield jointly handle his responsibilities.

Opodo is a pan-European travel company owned by nine of Europe’s leading airlines and Amadeus, a travel industry technology provider. It launched its first site in Germany in November 2001, with the UK site following two months later.
