Associated New Media chief takes MoS helm as md Mike Ironside quits

Mail on Sunday managing director Mike Ironside has resigned and has been replaced by Associated New Media managing director Stephen Miron.

Ironside, who has worked for Associated Newspapers for 14 years, was unavailable for comment as Marketing Week went to press and it is not known whether he has a job to go to.

At Associated New Media, Miron was responsible for Ireland on Sunday and the free advertisement newspaper Loot. He oversaw an advertising review for the latter in April last year, appointing Wieden & Kennedy.

The Mail on Sunday’s advertising is handled by Bartle Bogle Hegarty.

Miron joined Associated New Media in October 2001 (MWNovember 11, 2001) after serving as commercial director of The Independent. Previously, he worked at Associated Newspapers in advertising roles until 1998, when he joined The Independent.

Ironside was promoted from advertising director on the Daily Mail to managing director of the Mail on Sunday in December 1998 (MW December 10, 1998). Recent upheavals at the newspaper saw advertising director Sue Dear leave in June to be replaced by Simon Davies, head of advertising at Ireland on Sunday.

Like other UK newspapers, the Mail on Sunday has seen advertising revenues hit by a weak economy. In addition, the latest average net circulation figures for the newspaper show a drop of 0.4 per cent to 2,352,088 for September compared with August. The average net circulation for the six months of April to September 2003 dropped 0.55 per cent, compared with the same period in 2002.
