Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) international marketing director Alex Nicol’s role has been axed as part of a wider management restructure. Nicol has moved on to a new job at Scottish whisky company Whyte & Mackay as its chief operating officer.

At S&N, Nicol reported to managing director Richard Gibb, whose position remains unchanged within the company.

The brewer initiated its management review early this year, when it appointed Kodak European general manager of marketing Gary Guthrie to the newly created position of group marketing director (MW January 8).

Nicol starts at Whyte & Mackay at a time when the company has neither a marketing director nor an advertising agency in place.

It recently lost its marketing director, Glen Gribbon, who left days after advertising agency The Union resigned the company’s creative account (MW July 1).

Gribbon is continues to work with the distiller on a consultancy basis.

The Scottish distiller was known as Kyndal until last summer, when it announced a £70m revamp to be renamed after one of its core brands.

At the time the chairman and chief executive, Vivian Imerman, said that £50m would be spent on marketing, including television advertising for both the Whyte & Mackay whisky and Vladivar vodka brands.
