The Diary’s pastry…

The Diary’s pastry chef has been on his biennial vacation this week, so alternative sources of patisserie have had to be exploited. One such is a branch of Greggs in West Yorkshire, where the Diary came across some interesting sales tactics – no doubt put in place by new marketing director Scott Jefferson (MW September 2). One particular type of small bun, for instance, was priced at 31p. But, according to the helpful sign accompanying them, customers could choose to buy four of them for just £1.24. ‘What a splendid offer,’ thought the Diary. ‘And look at that! Curd tarts, at 39p apiece, can be purchased in bulk at the rate of four for £1.56. How does Greggs do it?’ The Diary, needless to say, has put on weight in the past week.
