Vodafone to lay off 80 marketers in the UK

Vodafone UK is axeing 80 people from its marketing and customer management departments as part of a three-year reorganisation.

In total, the telecoms giant is making 200 staff redundant (MW last week), with the finance and technology departments also affected.

Vodafone UK chief executive Bill Morrow is overseeing the reorganisation, and the company says it cannot rule out further cuts.

A spokeswoman declines to comment on which sections of the marketing department will be affected and says only: “There will be other people at risk but it’s impossible to say which people will be leaving at this stage.”

However, she denies speculation that the redundancies will start immediately and said there will be no departures until December.

Vodafone UK marketing director Lance Bachelor left the division earlier this year as part of the restructure. He has taken on the role of global marketing director of Vodafone Live!. Former marketing director for Ireland Tim Yates became chief marketing officer for the UK.

There have also been changes on the global side of the business. Global marketing chief David Haines left the company in July (MW June 10) and his responsibilities have been split between global consumer products chief Guy Lawrence and global business marketing director Rene Schuster. Earlier this month, Vodafone appointed Bartle Bogle Hegarty to its £250m global roster as part of a shake-up of its agency relationships (MW September 9).
