Boots ponders in-store TV roll-out

Boots is considering rolling out an in-store television network in up to 300 stores. It is using Avanti to test a service in a handful of outlets, including one in the Meadowhall shopping centre, Sheffield.

The retailer has yet to make final a decision on whether to go ahead with the network, but it is thought to have invited potential suppliers to tender for a contract to run the service should it proceed.

A spokesman says: “We have done the trial and there has been some positive feedback. We are now looking at opportunities for expanding it.”

Boots is investigating the economics of installing and running the service, offsetting the overheads against potential income to be generated from advertisers and from additional sales.

Tesco, meanwhile, is in the process of installing a major in-store TV network in 300 outlets, managed by JC Decaux. Other grocery retailers, such as Asda, Spar and Sainsbury’s, are also testing in-store TV. Hairdresser Toni & Guy has also installed a digital TV system, interspersing music, lifestyle information and film reviews with advertising from third parties such as haircare product manufacturers.
