Carbolite unveils soup and hot chocolates

Low-carbohydrate brand Carbolite is launching a range of soups and hot chocolates aimed at the convenience market later this month. The products, to go on sale in Superdrug, are being rolled out despite suggestions that the low-carbohydrate dieting trend is fading.

The three-variety soup range, which will be sold in cups, and the hot chocolates are also low in calories. The products are extremely low in carbohydrates: the soup range has between 1g and 2g of net carbohydrates per portion. They will be rolled out to the major supermarkets later in the year.

The ranges will also feature packaging designed specifically for the UK market. The existing Carbolite range, which includes chocolate bars, cereals, breakfast bars and crisps, uses packaging from the US. The brand has been licensed to manufacturer Retail Brands in the UK.

Retail Brands marketing director Mary Young, who disputes suggestions that the low-carbohydrate trend is on the wane, says the company is developing products to fill the holes in the range of low-carbohydrate products currently available. She adds that the products are suitable for people on a variety of diets, and for diabetics.

The products will be supported by a marketing campaign, which will include print advertising and radio for the first time.
