Bluewater marketing boss quits for Dubai

Bluewater marketing chief Alan Jones is leaving the Kent shopping centre to launch a new mall in Dubai.

He has been recruited to help launch the Mall of the Emirates centre in Dubai, which is scheduled to open later this year. A replacement for Jones, who has worked at Bluewater for the past three years and who is taking up his new role in March, has yet to be found.

Jones’ brief at the Mall of the Emirates is to develop a campaign that will achieve global exposure. It is not known whether he is recruiting an advertising agency to help him with this task. At Bluewater, Jones worked with FCB, which launched the shopping centre with a campaign featuring drops of water falling into a pool.

The Mall of the Emirates will contain more than 400 shops, including two department stores, over 90 restaurants, two hotels, a 14-screen multiplex cinema and the world’s largest indoor ski resort, which will use real snow.

The 2.4 million sq ft retail and leisure centre is bigger than any other similar development in Europe or the US, but it is half the size of the world’s largest retail development, also under construction in Dubai, called The Dubai Mall. Known as the “mall of malls” it will contain more than 1,000 stores and is a composition of between ten and 15 individual malls each catering for distinct product categories.
