Making a profit out of a crisis

While the German economy may have been performing rather poorly of late, the Diary has every confidence in its eventual resurgence. Zeitgeist is, after all, a German word, and one German company at least has its finger on the pulse of contemporary events.

On January 5, 2005, while the rest of the world was busy donating to charity and watching the news in horror, Pforzheim-based jewellery manufacturer Franz Breuning applied to register the trademark “TSUNAMI by Breuning” across the EU.

As well as jewellery, the application appears to cover personal safety devices. No doubt the company will be distributing these among the inhabitants of coastal areas around the world…
