Desert storm as adman runs off to Timbuktu… for charity

No doubt some of you are preparing to run the London Marathon for various good causes, and for this the Diary salutes you. But 26 miles? It’s a bit feeble, isn’t it? A six-day, 243km run across the Sahara Desert on the other hand…

Dom Robertson, an account director at brand experience agency RPM, is the glutton for punishment taking up the latter challenge that makes the London Marathon look like a Sunday morning stroll.

Dom, who started the run on April 7, says: “This challenge is going to push me to my limits, both physically and mentally.” Mental is the first thing the Diary thought of when it read what the Saharan race entailed.

He hopes to raise &£75,000 for the Fergus Maclay Leukaemia Trust and FARA, a foundation that cares for orphaned and abandoned children in Romania. Anyone wishing to make a donation can pledge their support by e-mailing Dom at

The Diary is impressed that anyone would even attempt this feat, but is somewhat saddened by Dom’s refusal to complete the run in the obligatory gorilla suit. Some people always seem to take the easy option…
