Gyro holds on to £5m Sun task

Gyro has retained the £5m global below-the-line account for IT company Sun Microsystems.

It is understood the agency fought off competition from Arc Worldwide, Proximity and Tequila to retain the business.

Gyro and Sun, which called the pitch from its US headquarters earlier this year, both refuse to confirm the news but it is thought the agency will be officially reappointed later this week.

Last month, Sun retained Starcom Worldwide to handle its media planning and buying account. The global media business is worth about £60m.

In 2003, the software giant ended its relationship with JWT, less than a year after reappointing the agency to its global business. It hired St Luke’s to work on its UK ad business but continues to use a number of other agencies on projects.

Sun has been on the acquisition trail recently, buying the unprofitable software company SeeBeyond for $387m (£220m) last week and Colorado-based Storage Technology for $4.1bn (£2.3bn) last month.

Sun boosted its share of the market for computer data storage following its acquisition of Storage Technology. It is trying to fend off competition from IBM and others in the data storage market.
