Pity poor Revolver, the PR and guerrilla marketing agency. Though its stunt of laying 95,000 plants in an intricate pattern in Trafalgar Square to promote Loire Valley wines received a lot of national press, certain sections of the general public seemed less than impressed.

During the unveiling of the floral carpet, Revolver staff were accosted by an angry woman who couldn’t collect coins out of the fountains, a gentleman who ranted that “Trafalgar Square’s all about us beating the Frenchies, so why are you doing this for them?”, and a businessman who commented “No wonder Nelson’s got his bloody back turned.”

A bemused Revolver managing director Martin Ballantine says: “The last time I checked, we were not at war with France.” Maybe not Martin, but as the Olympic bid showed, old wounds run deep.
