When the Diary was young, world records were an everyday occurrence. Roy Castle would watch intently, trumpet in hand, while Norris McWhirter lurked in the background with his clipboard at the ready, as a group of school children looked on in horror as their mass domino topple was inadvertently set off by a blundering caretaker before it had been completed.
Record-breaking hasn’t quite been the same since Roy’s sad death, but it would seem that the omnipresent Vernon Kay is keen on reigniting our passion for records. Kay hosted the OxiClean Custard Pie Fight at Bolton Arena late last month, which saw a world record breaking 20 people throw 3,320 custard pies in a mere two minutes and 20 seconds. The previous record stood at 3,312 pies in three minutes.
The event was organised by Acdoco, distributor of OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover, which donated &£1 per pie thrown to the Bolton Lads and Girls Club charity.
Kay is now free to concentrate on breaking the record for most television hours accrued in a calendar year, though he’ll have to go some to beat Tony Slattery’s 1991 record of 8,760.
