Aquados launches in travel-size pack

Aquados, the detergent manufacturer, is to target holidaymakers with specially designed travel-size packs of washing powder.

As part of a sampling drive planned for this autumn, the Glasgow company has produced miniature cartons of its powder-in-a-bag product, to be handed out at selected airports.

The packs contain two 50g sachets of detergent in soluble plastic capsules. They provide enough for two washes and will be available in both biological and non-biological formulations.

An Aquados spokesman says the move follows the development of other travel-size products, such as shampoo, and is aimed at the growing number of holidaymakers using self-catering apartments.

He says/ “When people go on holiday they go out and buy the smallest box of powder they can find but still end of up leaving most of it behind. Travel-size versions of other products have proved very successful, so this a logical next step.”

The travel-size packs will also go on sale in Savers stores, supported by in-store promotion and point-of-purchase displays. If the idea takes off, Aquados plans to approach larger retailers and vending-machine providers.

Launched by industrial process engineer Gerry Hinton in 2001, Aquados was the first company to develop a powder-in-a-bag product. The capsules are placed directly into the washing machine and dissolve on contact with water.

The product, which was developed by Hinton, is now sold by Tesco, Morrisons, Somerfield and Asda and the company has moved production to a 10,000 sqm facility in Leeds.
