Fujitsu Siemens plans ‘green at work’ drive

Fujitsu Siemens Computers is introducing an initiative to promote environmentally friendly practices at work.

The campaign is the result of a study, carried out by TNS PhoneBus, which looked into workers’ views and attitudes on the environment and the workplace. Fujitsu Siemens plans to use public relations initially to promote its “Green Collar Worker” initiative, and research will be ongoing. The company is also planning a campaign called the Big Turn-off, which will encourage employees to switch off their work computers at the end of the day.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers aims to use the research to encourage companies to adopt more “green” practices and to use environmentally friendly computer equipment. Fujitsu Siemens launched the first laptop that complies with the European Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances last month. It also produces “green” PC and related equipment.

According to TNS, 85 per cent of British workers say they recycle domestic waste, 45 per cent say they buy organic foods and 29 per cent make a point of dealing with ethical companies. Such ethics extend to work: 63 per cent of employees say they consciously save energy by turning off their PCs overnight and 68 per cent say they recycle paper at work.

A Fujitsu Siemens spokesman says that as well as being ethically sound, environmentally friendly computer equipment can also reduce energy bills.
