EasyMobile marketing chief quits suddenly

EasyMobile marketing chief Sandy Munro has left the no-frills mobile phone company after less than five months.

Munro, who was previously marketing director at T-Mobile, joined easyMobile as chief marketing officer in May (MW May 12). A spokeswoman for the company says he has left by mutual consent.

It is not known whether Munro will be directly replaced. EasyMobile head of business development Ole Jakob Thorsen, who runs the business day to day in the UK and reports to chief executive Frank Rasmussen, will oversee marketing until a decision is made about a replacement.

EasyMobile, which sells SIM cards over the internet, has used several digital agencies for its advertising since its launch earlier this year, but it was thought that Munro was considering holding a pitch to find a retained advertising agency. Thorsen denies easyMobile is looking for an agency.

Munro resigned as T-Mobile UK marketing director in November last year after two years in the post (MW November 25, 2004), but was expected to stay with the company in a different capacity. He was replaced by Unilever marketer Phil Chapman at the start of this year and subsequently left the company.

Like its “virtual” rival Virgin Mobile, easyMobile rents T-Mobile’s network. It is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with Orange, France Telecom’s mobile arm, over its use of the colour orange.
