3 Puts TV reality channel on mobile
Telecoms company 3 is launching its own mobile television reality channel this week. It will allow users to make video clips and charge others to watch them.
See Me TV shows 30-second videos of 3 customers displaying various talents and pays them one penny each time the clip is downloaded.
3’s chief operating officer Gareth Jones says: “We wanted to create the ultimate reality channel where you’re the talent and you decide what you want to do. And the more popular the clips, the more money you stand to make.”
Credits from downloads accumulate in an account and then are transferred to individuals using online payment service Paypal.
3’s sister company 3 Italia has made thousands of euros from the initiative. However, 3 said it would apply “very, very strict rules” on content amid fears the service will encourage “happy slapping”, where assaults are filmed on mobile phones.
3 also said it is in talks with potential advertising partners about beaming ads directly to mobile phones following trials with brands such as Redbus, the distributor of Brit-flick It’s All Gone Pete Tong.
