Comet hunts marketing chief after top-level rejig

Comet is searching for a head of marketing after promoting Bob Darke to commercial director, with a seat on the board, as part of a management reshuffle.

Darke’s new remit encompasses commercial, supply chain and direct channel functions. He will report to Comet managing director Hugh Harvey, who was previously deputy managing director of commercial.

As part of the reshuffle, Comet managing director Simon Fox has stepped up to chief operating officer of the retailer’s parent company, Kesa Electricals.

Darke has been with Comet for almost six years, and was responsible for forming the company’s grey goods team. He joined the marketing department in 2003 and spearheaded the brand’s relaunch programme in 2005. Advertising is handled by Saatchi & Saatchi.

Comet says the head of marketing position has yet to be filled. The appointee will report to Harvey.

Fox says: “Harvey and Darke have made outstanding contributions to the business. Their experience will be central to our success.”

Woolworths entered a joint venture with Comet recently to enter the white goods market and strengthen its position as a multi-channel retailer. Comet@Woolworths will offer 2,500 lines provided by Comet, available online, through in-store terminals or through a telephone ordering service.
