Ofcom’s telemarketing changes could do more

The new changes to outbound telemarketing regulations recently announced by Ofcom are encouraging, but I would like to make two points.

First, the actual percentage of abandoned calls is a bit of a red herring; in my view it is not an abandoned call that causes the problem, but an abandoned call with no message or CLI that causes anxiety and stress (the Ofcom regulations, of course, address this).

Second, the rise of a fine from &£5,000 to &£50,000 will be absolutely pointless unless it is enforced. I cannot recall a single case in which the &£5,000 fine has been imposed on even the most persistent of offenders.
