PepsiCo has appointed John Compton to the new role of chief executive for North American operations, in a bid to improve coordination between its divisions.

Compton, who is currently president and chief executive of its Quaker Tropicana Gatorade division, will take over the role immediately. Chuck Maniscalco, president of Gatorade and Propel, will take over his role.

The appointment is part of a restructure of PepsiCo’s worldwide operations with the new North American division and the existing PepsiCo International division, which will continue to by headed by Michael White. The changes come just ahead of Indra Nooyi taking over as PepsiCo president and chief executive on October 1.

Nooyi says the changes will "help balance leadership in the North America segment and its individual businesses".

She says: "Since the PepsiCo International division was created, its businesses are developing successfully and the entire portfolio has delivered consistently outstanding performance. We are confident the new North American structure will enhance the effectiveness and drive added momentum there as well."

Nooyi was appointed as PepsiCo chief executive last month after incumbent Steve Reinemund announced he was to retire in October to spend more time with his family.
