T-Mobile has signed up as the first advertiser to use the on-campus network developed by Tabletalk Media.

From today (Monday) the mobile network operator will run a campaign to promote its new flat-rate tariff on student bar tables in 55 UK universities, using the tagline "Nothing should come between you and your friends".

The campaign will run for two weeks, to coincide with the new university year. Some 1.25 million students are expected to see the ads. According to Lloyd Keisner, managing director of Tabletalk an estimated 14% of students switch their mobile contracts in their first month of university.

Tabletalk’s on-campus network covers over 2,000 tables at 75 universities and offers advertisers a potential reach of 1.5 million students, or 70% of the UK’s total student population.

Gaining a blue-chip advertiser marks an early success for its university network. Before now Tabletalk has concentrated its efforts on selling tabletop advertising in coffee shop chains and motorway service stations. The company is due to announce more deals in the coming weeks, and hopes to extend the network to 100 universities by the end of the year.
