Blackpool Council is seeking a major brand to be the first sponsor of its key tourist attraction, the Blackpool Illuminations.

The £2m deal includes naming rights, and is expected to start in 2007 and run for up to five years. The council is also keen to work with sponsors on areas such as reducing energy consumption and using renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power.

Each year, the six-mile illuminations attract over 3.5 million visitors to the town, who spend over £275m during the nine weeks that the lights are on. The council is understood to be looking to extend its August to November season in a bid to add more flexibility to the attraction.
