Bacardi chief lands global Bombay Sapphire gin role

Andrew Carter, UK marketing director for Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands (BBF), has been appointed global brand director for premium gin Bombay Sapphire. He will report to Stella David, chief marketing officer for Bacardi Global Brands.

He will be replaced in the UK by John Burke, who has been global brand director for Bacardi Rum for the past two years. Burke will now take responsibility for Martini, Grey Goose vodka, Bombay Sapphire, Bacardi Breezer, Jack Daniels, Southern Comfort and Finlandia vodka.

Carter (pictured) will be charged with developing the Bombay Sapphire brand, which is one of Bacardi-Martini’s three worldwide “power brands”. He says that it is the fastest-growing premium gin in the world and a “global spirits icon”.

BBF is Bacardi’s joint venture with US wine and spirits group Brown Forman, which markets both companies’ brands in the UK.

Carter joined BBF UK late last year (MW 5 January), and was previously Bacardi-Martini UK’s director of marketing for spirits. He joined the company in November 2004 from Lion Nathan, where he had been director of UK and Europe, in charge of the £9m UK relaunch of Castlemaine XXXX in 2002 (MW November 7, 2002). Prior to that, he was marketing controller at Bulmers.

In his two years with Bacardi-Martini UK, Carter has worked on the launch of the Bacardi Carta Blanca rum advertising campaign last year, and the new Bacardi advertising campaign earlier this year (MW July 20).
