Flybe launches check-in service via text message

Low-cost airline Flybe is introducing a text message check-in service that will let passengers avoid being charged to check in at standard desks.

The airline aims to encourage passengers to use text and online check-in because it is “seriously considering” charging for check-in at manned airport desks.

It is launching a range of other check-in options that do not incur a charge.

This year the airline launched Online Check, which gives passengers the opportunity to check-in hand and hold baggage free via a pre-trip e-mail service.

Director of marketing Simon Lilley says: “Traditional check-in is expensive, so where we incur costs we will not be shy in passing these on to our customers.”

Flybe is still in talks with mobile operators about setting up the SMS service. The facility will allow passengers to answer security questions by SMS text. Their boarding pass will then be sent to their mobile phone and airport security will scan the mobile phone screen.

Lilley says: “We know that our customers are willing to move with technology and understand that, if we are to keep fares down, we need to continue to drive down costs.”

Flybe is entering the £3bn UK flower industry with the launch of Flybe Flowers (MW October 12). The new venture will form just one strand of a range of home shopping initiatives dreamt up by the airline as it seeks to develop its revenue streams.
