Help the Aged backs social networking site

Help the Aged is supporting a new social community website that encourages members to share their life stories and helps them stay in touch with friends and family.

The site,, will also allow users to search its database for old acquaintances and members can also set-up online “memorials” for relatives that have passed away.

Actress Liz Smith, who plays Nana in the Royle Family, will be the first user to upload her life story.

The charity will promote the site in its online shop section and will receive 20% of the registration and annual fee as a donation from meRemembered when if new members sign up via the link.

Alison McCormack, head of new media for Help the Aged says: “The internet offers fantastic opportunities for people of different ages to communicate and is an ideal way of older people staying in touch with younger generations of their family and sharing their life history with them.”

Research for Help the Aged, conducted by Ipsos MORI, shows that 2.4 million (26%) people over 65 years old see new technology as a way of remaining independent later in life, with web-based networking sites proving to be as popular with people approaching retirement age as with younger generations.
