Broadcaster Five has been cleared by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for its Nothing Good Ever Came out of America campaign. The poster supported the launch of Five US channel.

The ASA received 99 complaints that the posters were offensive and racist towards Americans or that the campaign could incite violence.

Five argued that the posters were designed to set up the contention that nothing good had come out of America so that the subsequent executions could highlight the good American TV and films that would feature on the channel. It also added the posters only ran in 100 sites for one week. The ASA accepted Five’s argument.

• Meanwhile, the watchdog has slammed TalkSport over fake blogs on football-related websites. The blogs purported to be from a member of the public alerting readers to a TalkSport promotion offering fans the chance to be the official “voice” of their favourite teams. The competition was promoted on air and on the TalkSport website.

The ASA ruled that the blogs breached the code because they were not properly identified as ads.
