3 marketing director Graeme Oxby is leaving the third-generation mobile phone operator after five years. He will be replaced by director of customer marketing John Penberthy-Smith.

Former Vodafone marketer Penberthy-Smith, who joined 3 in October, will report to new deputy chief executive Kevin Russell. Oxby will leave the company in March and is expected to take up a role in the private equity sector specialising in telecoms, media and technology.

Penberthy-Smith held several marketing roles at Vodafone, including head of global voice propositions for Vodafone Group and director of consumer marketing for Vodafone UK.

He says: "3 is the challenger in the market and I look forward to building its leading 3G position by offering compelling customer propositions that are easy to understand."
