Friends of the Earth targets students in climate push

The environmental charity, Friends of the Earth (FoE), is launching a hard-hitting poster campaign aimed at students, who, the charity claims, are “a demographic with some of the least green behaviour”.

FoE says the ad push, which breaks next week, features some of the worst polluters (a power station, car and plane) having their emissions stopped by strategically placed condoms. As part of its The Big Ask strategy, the campaign calls on students to support “protection against climate change” and emphasises that solutions to climate change do exist and students have an important role in tackling it.

The campaign will be rolled out in and around UK universities across the country and will run as poster and table-top ads.

FoE head of communications Adeela Warley says: “This is a great opportunity to specifically target a really important audience, as students are the decision-makers of the future. We hope the creative strength of the campaign will really engage them and help them realise that solutions to climate change do exist, and that they can play an important role in tackling it.”

The charity aims to alter perceptions by increasing awareness of climate change, and highlights the fact that solutions do exist and that there is still time to act. FoE supports a range of measures, including renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies to tackle climate change.

The FoE campaign, funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, will run in 30 university campuses across England. The campaign also features a website: www.climatesafe.co.uk. The campaign has been created by Clemmow Hornby Inge.
