MySpace launches film channel with user-generated film

MySpace, the News Corporation-owned social networking site, is making a film made by its users.

The £1m user generated content (UGC) project, MyMovie MashUp, marks the launch of its MySpace Film channel, which is designed to provide a creative platform for the UK’s film community. Vertigo Films and Film4 have partnered with MySpace for the project.

MySpace users will be involved in each stage of the film development from online casting and interactive script editing to marketing and distribution of the final product. The film is scheduled for release in 2008.

As part of the first phase of the project MySpace has invited aspiring directors to submit a short film via the MyMovie MashUp site. Entries will be shortlisted by a panel of industry experts, including actors Sienna Miller and Ashley Walters and directors Kevin Macdonald and Michael Caton-Jones, at the end of April.

MySpace users will then vote to select the director who will lead production of the movie.

Auditions for parts in the film are expected to take place from early July to September via MySpace members’ homepages.

Other partners involved in the project include The Times, short film label Future Shorts and independent filmmaking community Shooting People.
