BT and Microsoft are supporting a new Web safety think-tank launched across Europe this week, which aims to promote the benefits of the online world.

The Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) is a non-profit organisation tasked with increasing understanding and decreasing fears of the online world.

It aims to achieve this by promoting discussions between government and technology leaders.

It will also focus on helping children understand the benefits of a connected online world, through education, events, and public policy.

The institute will be chaired by Nick Truman, head of internet security at BT.

Stephen Balkam, chief executive of FOSI, says: “In this always on, digital world, things change quickly and we continually need new tools and methods to help keep families safe when they’re online.”

FOSI will hold the first international annual online safety conference, exhibition and awards event in Washinton DC in December. The institute has also received support from a number of other technology companies, including Cisco and AOL.
