Tesco rivals enjoy growth spurt

Asda and Sainsbury’s are growing at faster rates than rival Tesco, although it is the UK’s leading supermarket, according to the latest grocery figures from TNS Worldpanel. The three chains have also added 1.6 share points over the past year.

The figures, which cover the 12 weeks to March 25, shows that Asda and Sainsbury’s have grown by 9% and 8% respectively compared to 7% for Tesco over the same period.

Edward Garner, TNS Worldpanel director of research, says that the figures show the buoyancy of the grocery sector compared to the high street.

Somerfield saw its share of the market drop by 0.3 points for a second successive period in contrast to Morrisons, which saw growth of 4% and has reported growth for 11 successive periods.
