Green Flag in flux after restructuring

The future of the Green Flag marketing department is in doubt following a wider restructure at RBS Group. The news follows the departure of the brand’s managing director Andy Watson at the start of the year (MW January 11)

It is not clear whether Green Flag’s marketing director Hilary Williams will be affected by the changes, but a spokesman for the RBS-owned brand refuses to deny that she is moving roles or leaving the business completely.

The news comes in the final stages of the brand’s £10m advertising review. It is thought that agencies have been presenting to members of Direct Line’s marketing department, leading to confusion about where the Green Flag brand sits in the wider RBS portfolio. Advertising agency Shop is tipped to win the creative business.

Williams’ role as marketing director of UKI Partnerships, which manages the Green Flag brand, was broadened when Green Flag was bought by RBS and she is thought to have a team of about 30 people reporting to her.

Green Flag head of brand Nigel Costello is believed to have left at the end of last year and was followed afterwards by UKI managing director Watson, who had been in the role for less than 18 months.

Watson left his role as general insurance director of the Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS) in the summer of 2005 to replace Chris Moat as managing director of UKI Partnerships. He joined CIS in February 2004 after leaving Direct Line.
