Arnold, the Boston-based agency, and London independent Nitro have been appointed to handle the £80m global advertising account for Volvo following a five-month review. The two agencies beat Fallon Worldwide in a final pitch to win the business.

Euro RSCG had handled the global Volvo business since 1991 but was eliminated from the review at an earlier stage, along with 180 Amsterdam. Goodby Silverstein & Partners withdrew from the pitch to pursue another car account, thought to be Hyundai.

Volvo director of global advertising Tim Ellis, who ran the pitch, says: “Through focused strategic thought and an inspiring creative idea we believe they are the best agency team to accelerate the momentum of our brand.

The Arnold/Nitro team will be led from Arnold’s Boston office and its first task will be to develop global launch campaigns for the new V70 and XC70, which were unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motorshow.
