Howell leaves McCann Erickson after four years

McCann Erickson European chief Rupert Howell is leaving in June after four years at the network. It is thought that Howell, currently regional director for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), has another role lined up although it has yet to be announced.

Howell’s responsibilities will be taken over by EMEA chairman Guiseppe Usuelli, who is based in Milan.

McCann Worldgroup chief executive John Dooner says that Howell joined the network during “a difficult period” but has “restored the confidence and growth” of the region during his tenure. Howell joined the network as chairman of the UK and Ireland group replacing Ben Langdon. His role was expanded to include Europe in 2005.

He had been working as a consultant before joining McCann-Erickson after leaving his role as chief executive of Chime Communications in 2002. He joined the group after selling the agency he co-founded Howell Henry Caldecott Lury (HHCL) in 1998. He has also worked at Ogilvy & Mather, Grey and Y&R.

Usuelli was named chairman of McCann Erickson EMEA in 2005. In addition to his expanded responsibilities, Usuelli retains his post as chairman and chief executive of McCann Worldgroup Italy.
