OMD UK has won the £22m consolidated media planning and buying account for the HMV and Waterstone’s brands. The agency, which was the incumbent on HMV’s account, pitched against MediaCom, Starcom and Waterstone’s incumbent PHD to win the business.

The review, which was called in February, was overseen by HMV marketing director Graham Sim. The appointment of OMD comes at a difficult time for HMV, which is struggling in the face of competition from online music download sites and reported a loss of £31.8m at the end of last year.

HMV appointed Quiet Storm to its advertising roster last year with a brief to create a brand campaign that ran last autumn. The company’s retained advertising agency Beechwood was reappointed to handle the business in 2004 (MW April 22, 2004).

A spokesman for HMV declines to comment on the appointment.
