BT and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) have teamed up to add wireless broadband communications functions to its PSP (PlayStation Portable) including video calls, voice calls and messaging.

The two companies have struck a four-year deal to develop a raft of extra features for the PSP, which has shipped more than 8 million units in Europe and 24 million globally. The service will initially be rolled out in the UK.

BT developed the technology as part of its 21 CN project, and the partnership aims to integrate PSP with the BT broadband video and voice “softphone” products, which are already on the market.

Additional features will be launched in the following months to enable calls and messages to PCs, fixed lines and mobiles.
