Majestic raids John Lewis for marketing director

Majestic Wine Warehouses has appointed John Lewis marketer David Sinfield as its new marketing director. He will join in August and report to chief operating officer Steve Lewis.

Sinfield, who is thought to be taking over from Giles Cooper, is head of category and direct marketing at John Lewis. He was previously head of stores marketing at supermarket group Safeway before it was taken over by Morrisons. He has also been a brand manager for restaurant chain TGI Friday’s.

Majestic started in north London in 1980 and is now the largest wine warehouse chain in the UK. It has 133 stores and reported annual sales of £172m last year.

In 2001, Majestic bought French company Les Celliers de Calais and rebranded it Wine and Beer World to cater to the largely British customer base.
