Domino’s Pizza is launching a service that will allow customers to order pizzas by text message. Domino’s claims it is the first pizza company to use text message ordering in the UK.

The service will sit alongside Domino’s existing ordering methods: over the phone, via the website or through its outlets. The pizza company says 2,000 users have already signed up to the new service, following a trial launched in July.

The service uses the same technology as the congestion charge text message scheme. It works by asking customers to text in orders from their mobile phones by giving them easy-to-remember names. Customers then give their delivery address and mobile number before placing their order.

Chris Moore, deputy chief executive at Domino’s Pizza, says: “The increasing penetration of broadband in the UK and shift to using mobile phones for so much more than making calls has helped shape our strategy to use mobile technology in this way.”
